            <title>Con-way Freight Launches Major Expansion of Successful Employee Wellness Program</title>
            <link>http://www.kgmoment.com/agency/news/item/Conway_Freight_Launches_Major_Expansion_of_Successful_Employee_Wellness_Program</link>
            <description>Program Has Boosted Employee Health and Morale, Reduced Workplace Injuries, Costs

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sept. 8, 2008 -- Con-way Freight has launched a major expansion of a successful wellness program that is improving the health and physical fitness of its employees while reducing incidences of workplace injuries and their associated costs.

Initially rolled out at 14 company facilities across eight states, the company is expanding the initiative into an additional 52 facilities, reaching 4,100 more employees in another 13 states. By the close of 2008, the program, provided in collaboration with Wellness Coaches USA, will be available to a total of 6,400 employees at 66 facilities in 21 states. Con-way Freight is a subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW).

In conjunction with the program expansion, Con-way Freight is also launching a 10-week weight loss competition titled &quot;Choose to Lose.&quot; Beginning today, the competition is open to employees throughout the company's network of more than 400 service locations. Participating employees will attend periodic weigh-ins, with $100, $50 and $25 clothing store gift certificates to be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners in each of the wellness program's regions. There will also be an award for the service center with the greatest participation.

Extraordinary initial results and positive employee feedback were the primary drivers behind the decision to expand the program, in which trained health and fitness professionals provided by Wellness Coaches USA are stationed at the company's freight service centers.

&quot;We've seen lifelong smokers quitting smoking, employees lowering chronic high blood pressure, overweight employees shedding pounds and still others discovering and being treated for life-threatening conditions,&quot; said Bob Petrancosta, vice president of safety for Con-way Freight. &quot;You can't put a price tag on successes like that.&quot;

Launched in early 2007 as a pilot program at several locations, participation in the wellness initiative quickly topped expectations, with as many as 95 percent of employees choosing to meet voluntarily -- and privately -- with their on-site coach for personal health assessment screening and counseling. The results were nearly immediate: by year-end 2007, the company saw workplace injuries and related worker's compensation costs decrease by 80 percent, with lost work days cut by 75 percent at the pilot locations.

As the program has grown, so have the results, which to date have included:
Nearly 831 employees losing a combined total of 6,269 pounds
More than 170 employees quitting smoking
669 employees reducing blood pressure from hypertensive levels
Nearly 1,470 employees improving overall health through exercise and diet regimens that lowered blood pressure
More than 5,300 employees attending a combined total of 74,360 one-on-one coaching sessions

The company's 2008 wellness program expansion targets 14 geographical clusters where a single wellness coach will serve multiple operating locations. Coaches will be covering facilities in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

At Con-way Freight, Wellness Coaches USA coaches have integrated seamlessly into the company's structure and culture. They begin at each operating location by offering initial health risk assessments along with biometric testing including blood pressure and body composition evaluations. Employees may then choose to participate in one-on-one health-risk coaching to address issues uncovered by the testing. In addition, coaches develop and promote wellness programming such as walking, weight loss and smoking cessation contests, health fairs and informational displays. They also assist with company-wide efforts like a video-based injury-prevention stretching program launched at every company location in early April.

&quot;Con-way Freight made a commitment to the health of its employees and collaborated with us to deliver a program that produced results,&quot; said Gene McGuire, chief marketing officer for Wellness Coaches USA. &quot;The company proved that by providing resources, guidance and information, it could transform the lives of its employees both at work and at home. With the tremendous results we have already seen, we are thrilled to take our relationship with Con-way Freight to the next level.&quot;

Blue Bell, Pa.-based Wellness Coaches USA is the leading national provider of on-site coach-powered workplace wellness.

            <title>Disability RMS Addresses Complaints Against Long-Term Disability Industry over Social Security ...</title>
            <link>http://www.kgmoment.com/agency/news/item/Disability_RMS_Addresses_Complaints_Against_LongTerm_Disability_Industry_over_Social_Security_Disability_Practices_</link>
            <description>Company Issues Bulletin Outlining Impact of Pending Inquiries

WESTBROOK, Maine -- Aug. 13, 2008 -- Disability RMS, the nation's leading provider of turnkey disability risk management products and services, today announced the release of a bulletin written by Andrew J. Bernstein, vice president, law. The bulletin, directed to Disability RMS customers, addresses the current focus on the practices of many long-term disability insurers in assisting their participants in obtaining Social Security Disability benefits.

On April 1, 2008, The New York Times published a story attacking the private disability insurance industry for allegedly engaging in improper and deceptive practices by supposedly forcing insureds who will not qualify for Social Security Disability benefits to apply for such benefits. The article incorrectly contends that private disability insurers are responsible for the Social Security Administration's massive backlog of disability benefit applications.

Iowa Sen. Charles Grassley, the senior Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, sent letters to the nine largest disability insurers requesting detailed information regarding their respective Social Security Disability assistance programs for insureds. Sen. Grassley has been quoted as calling &quot;abominable&quot; the fact that sick and injured people must often wait more than a year before their claims can be decided by a Social Security Administration administrative law judge.

The Disability RMS bulletin outlines the many actions that the disability insurance industry has taken to call attention to the true facts concerning the Social Security Administration backlog and the value of private insurers' assistance to their insureds in obtaining Social Security Disability benefits. &quot;As is our practice, Disability RMS continuously monitors industry developments and shares our analysis -- and the potential impact of these developments -- with our customers,&quot; said Bernstein. &quot;The rates of approval for applicants who received assistance from disability insurers are significantly higher than those of other applicants. Further, the backlog is due to chronic underfunding of the Social Security Administration, an insufficient pool of administrative law judges, and the escalation of disability benefit claims from aging baby boomers,&quot; noted Bernstein. A complete copy of the bulletin can be found on the Disability RMS Web site at www.disabilityrms.com.

Bernstein has more than 20 years' experience in the disability insurance industry and is a frequent author and speaker on subjects including best practices in disability claims management and disability fraud. As vice president, law, for Disability RMS, Bernstein provides legal guidance to the organization and ensures that Disability RMS claims and business practices are legally compliant. He also works closely with Disability RMS customers to help them achieve their business objectives within a legally sound framework. Prior to joining Disability RMS in 2001, Bernstein co-owned a disability claims management consulting firm. Past experience also includes a variety of leadership roles in Unum's legal department and disability claims operations. Bernstein is a past chair of the American Council of Life Insurance-Health Insurance Association of America's Joint ERISA Task Force.

            <description>One of Five International Competitors Will Design Public Art Project at Sprague Energy Tank Farm in South Portland

PORTLAND, Maine -- Aug. 13, 2008 -- The Maine Center for Creativity (MCC), a Maine-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting the growth of the arts and creative industries in Maine, has announced the five finalists for its Art All Around(TM) international design competition. The multinational group includes two collaborative teams. Each finalist/team has won up to $10,000, including the cost of travel to Portland for the final leg of the competition. An additional $20,000 will go to the eventual winner, whose design will be painted on some of the most prominent oil tanks at the Sprague Energy tank farm in South Portland. The finalists were announced at an Aug. 12 event at the Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel in South Portland.

MCC created Art All Around, one of Maine's largest public art projects to date, to highlight Maine's thriving creative economy and exceptional quality of life. The organization received 560 design entries from around the globe, including China, Taiwan, Italy, Australia and Thailand, as well as towns such as Greenville, Bridgton and Whitefield in Maine. Between the March 25 competition kickoff and the June 25 deadline, entries poured in from 73 countries and nearly every U.S. state. A nine-person panel of international judges selected the finalists in an anonymous judging process. For further details on the competition, visit www.artallaround.com.

&quot;The talented artists chosen as finalists represent several countries and a wide range of backgrounds,&quot; said Jean Maginnis, executive director, Maine Center for Creativity. &quot;They each brought unique and original vision to the competition while displaying a clear understanding of the importance of this public art project and its role as a symbol of Maine's thriving creative community.&quot;

The five Art All Around finalists are*:

*	Catherine Callahan and Bret LeBleu of South Portland
*	Holger Friese of Berlin
*	Jaime Gili of London
*	Nicole Langille of Columbus, Ohio
*	Bo Nathan Newsome of Durham, N.C., and Sara Lambert Bloom of South Portland

*See finalist biographies below.

Members of the public who would like to see the finalists present their designs are invited to an artist talk and unveiling set for Thursday, Aug. 14, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at University College at Rockland, Breakwater Building, 91 Camden St., Suite 402, Rockland.

&quot;We want to thank everyone who submitted a design for Art All Around,&quot; said Maginnis. &quot;There were so many interesting and imaginative entries -- it was tremendously challenging for the judges to choose just five. We greatly enjoyed seeing the ideas and reading the comments of creative people from all over the world.&quot;

Finalist Biographies and Statements
*	Catherine Callahan of South Portland holds a Master of Landscape Architecture from Cornell University and a bachelor's degree from McGill University. She has been a designer for several landscape architecture firms and recently launched her own design firm, Blue Landscape. Callahan's work has been published in the Journal of Landscape Architecture and Reconsidering Concrete Atlantis. An accomplished painter and installation artist, she has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and received grants and awards including the Cornell Council on the Arts Individual Artist Award and the Special Opportunity Stipend from the New York Foundation on the Arts. She is founder of the Byrdcliffe Outdoor Arts Exhibition at the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony and cofounder of the Arts Society of Kingston, both in New York.

Bret LeBleu of South Portland is a graduate of Cornell University's Master of Landscape Architecture program and holds a bachelor's degree in imaging science from Rochester Institute of Technology. He has worked in landscape design roles at firms including Gawron Turgeon Architects, Richardson &amp; Associates and Trowbridge &amp; Wolf LLP. A former artist's assistant at SUNY Purchase's Neuberger Museum, LeBleu was a 2004 recipient of the Edna Sussman Environmental Grant for his work on the Cayuga Waterfront Trail in Ithaca, N.Y.

&quot;When we heard about the competition, we were excited by the potential of using the monumental oil tanks as a canvas and the opportunity to use an industrial vocabulary to create public art on such a large scale. We have always been intrigued by Portland's waterfront, of which the oil tanks are an integral part.&quot;
 -- Catherine Callahan and Bret LeBleu

*	Holger Friese of Berlin became a professional photographer in 1990. Later, he worked as assistant director of the International New Jazz Festival in Moers, Germany, before completing his undergraduate studies in visual communication at the University of Applied Sciences Aachen. In his site-specific artwork, Friese questions social processes and the effects of a media-driven society. His public art projects in Berlin, such as Zeichen/Sign (2004) and Black and White (2007), play with the readability of digital content in public areas. A former lecturer on the multimedia art faculty at the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg, Friese has participated in exhibitions including documenta X and net.condition in Germany and Art Meets Media: Adventures in Perception in Japan. He has also been featured in many publications. Friese is the founder of FROZEN_BULL artproduction and continues to develop Internet-based systems and tools.

&quot;I've had the idea for my design for a long time. I studied digital images as a student, and that was the starting point -- using image information to take familiar images to the abstract. This project was the first opportunity to get it out of the computer and into the real world.&quot;
-- Holger Friese

*	Jaime Gili of London began his art studies in his native Caracas, Venezuela, in 1988. After moving to Spain, he enrolled at the University of Barcelona and received a bachelor's degree and doctorate in fine arts. He has also studied in Lisbon, Paris, Berlin and London. Gili has participated in dozens of solo and group exhibitions in countries including Mexico, Venezuela, Australia, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. His work appears in public collections at Saatchi Gallery and Christie's Contemporary in London, as well as Banco Mercantil in Caracas, L'Oreal in Madrid and the University of Essex. Gili has been featured in publications such as Artforum, ArtPapers, Time Out London and The Guardian. He has written more than 30 pieces for a variety of periodicals, and has worked as London correspondent for LAPIZ, a Madrid-based arts magazine.

&quot;I've been influenced by many artists from 20th Century Venezuelan modernism. Some of the most important artists from that time did large-scale projects that I have always admired. The challenge of the scale and grandeur of the site in Portland and of joining those artists' achievements is what attracted me to this project.&quot;
-- Jaime Gili

*	Nicole Langille of Columbus, Ohio, received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from Boston University, where she was awarded the William Randolph Hearst Fellowship from the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass, Colo. She later moved to New York City, where she participated in exhibits in venues including the Queens Museum of Art in Queens, N.Y. After relocating to the West Coast, she changed course from sculpture to installation, completing site-specific designs for spaces such as the Lake Washington United Methodist Church in Kirkland, Wash. Langille recently began work on her Master of Fine Arts in painting and drawing at The Ohio State University. The environment and the human relationship to it is the primary interest of her drawings, installations and public interventions.

&quot;The Art All Around project caught my attention for a variety of reasons, the most prominent of which was the complex nature of the site. It is teeming with contrasting relationships from the conceptual to the physical. The Sprague tank farm represents a challenging and compelling confluence of energies -- rich and dynamic material for any artist.&quot;
-- Nicole Langille

*	Bo Nathan Newsome of Durham, N.C., is an oboist, composer and educator in the Triangle region of North Carolina. A 2005 Composer Fellowship recipient of the North Carolina Arts Council, he has received commissions from the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., the North Carolina Museum of Life and Science, Mallarme Chamber Players and the Exploris children's museum. Newsome has created five scores for documentary productions for North Carolina Public Television, several in collaboration with Preservation North Carolina. A passionate advocate for creative education, he has developed curriculum-based programs for the symphonies in Charlotte and Raleigh. He currently performs with Mallarme Chamber Players and the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, and teaches at Duke University and East Carolina University.

&quot;The Art All Around project inspired me to think of ways to illuminate this magnificent state. My hope is that our project inspires the community of Maine and the world beyond in creative and collaborative ways. And, in turn, that it might generate an ongoing cycle of new images and ideas long into the future.&quot;
-- Bo Nathan Newsome

Sara Lambert Bloom of South Portland spent a 35-year career as a professional oboist, teacher, chamber music coach and advisor, as well as a published author, essayist and archivist. Currently, she has established a second career as a residential and commercial mortgage broker. Bloom has continued to support the arts by bringing collaborative residencies to schools as codirector of Maine Initiative for Creative and Collaborative Expression (MICE!), serving on the advisory committee made up of former trustees of Chamber Music America. She recently accepted the reappointment by Maine Governor John Baldacci to represent the performing arts on the Maine Tourism Commission through 2012. Her other projects include archiving the materials of her late husband, celebrated oboist Robert Bloom.

&quot;We are thrilled to participate in this project -- an opportunity to tell the story of an extraordinary state that has nurtured, inspired and sustained generations over the centuries and continues to offer a vibrant world of beauty and quality of life to its citizens and visitors.&quot;
-- Sara Lambert Bloom

In late September, the judges will select one winner whose design will be applied to the tanks. Professional contractors will paint the winning artwork on the tops and sides of eight tanks and the tops of an additional eight starting in fall 2008. Competition organizers expect the painting to be complete in 2011, if weather permits.

            <title>Menlo Worldwide Logistics Expands Relationship with Kettle Foods</title>
            <link>http://www.kgmoment.com/agency/news/item/Menlo_Worldwide_Logistics_Expands_Relationship_with_Kettle_Foods</link>
            <description>Logistics Provider Enters Wisconsin Market to Manage New Warehouse for All-Natural Premium Snack Foods Company

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- Aug. 12, 2008 -- Menlo Worldwide Logistics, the global logistics subsidiary of Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW), today announced that it has expanded its relationship with Salem, Ore.-based Kettle Foods to include management of a new 105,000-square-foot dedicated warehouse in Beloit, Wis. Menlo previously provided warehouse management for the premium natural snack foods company at a multi-client facility in Illinois. The new warehouse operation -- 50 percent larger than the previous one -- opened in early August near the company's Beloit manufacturing plant. It is Menlo's first logistics operation in the state of Wisconsin.

&quot;By choosing Menlo, we've been able to take advantage of the flexibility they offer in both multi-client and dedicated warehouse management. As our business grew and circumstances changed, our relationship with Menlo has reflected those changes,&quot; said Janell Fehlen, director of operations, Kettle Foods. &quot;Menlo also shares our strong commitment to environmental sustainability, one of the top priorities at Kettle Foods.&quot;

Menlo is providing the staff, systems and equipment for the new facility, where activities include receiving, storage, inventory management and outbound distribution. The food grade warehouse is operating under the Lean philosophy of waste elimination and continuous improvement followed at Menlo facilities worldwide. Food grade certification requires meeting American Institute of Baking (AIB) rigorous standards for protection of the safety of the food supply chain.

&quot;We began our relationship with Kettle Foods last year at our multi-client operation in Aurora, Ill., and that solution -- with its flexibility and scalability to expand and contract with a customer's business -- was an excellent fit for them initially,&quot; said Gary Kowalski, chief operating officer, Menlo Worldwide Logistics. &quot;Due to Kettle Foods' rapid growth and success in the marketplace, a larger, dedicated facility became necessary and locating it near the company's manufacturing facility allowed them to realize savings in fuel costs. We're now leveraging our years of expertise to serve their unique business needs at the Wisconsin warehouse.&quot;

Kettle Foods' Beloit potato chip manufacturing plant was awarded Gold-level certification for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) by the U.S. Green Building Council in 2007, in recognition of the company's efforts to minimize the environmental impact of the facility. Other Kettle Foods initiatives at the location include offsetting 100 percent of electricity use through the purchase of wind power and use of on-site wind turbines, recycling of used cooking oil into biodiesel to fuel some company cars, and filtering and reusing potato wash water.

Menlo supports the environment as part of an enterprise-wide sustainability initiative undertaken by its parent company, Con-way Inc. It joined the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partner program aimed at reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions last year and is working to educate and promote green initiatives among its contract carriers. Menlo recently received a SmartWay Shipper Index Factor (SIF) of 1.25, the highest score awarded under the program. Today, approximately 85 percent of the company's total network miles are covered by SmartWay-approved carriers.

Founded in 1978, Kettle Foods is a privately owned company committed to producing great-tasting, all-natural snacks with a caring commitment to its employees, craft and community. Its manufacturing sites in Salem, Ore., and Beloit, Wis., produce more than 20 flavors and four varieties of potato chip offerings, five flavors of tortilla chips made with organic corn and a variety of nut butters and trail mixes. Visit www.kettlefoods.com for more information.

            <description>Tyler Ellison Joins Company as President, Leads Strategic Development and Expansion of Capabilities for Nationwide Truckload Brokerage Solutions as Division of Menlo Worldwide Logistics

SAN MATEO, Calif., and PORTLAND, Ore. -- Aug. 6, 2008 -- Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) today announced that it has launched Con-way Multimodal(TM) providing expanded freight brokerage capabilities and services in the third-party logistics and multimodal freight transportation business, focusing on flexible, efficient capacity solutions for the marketplace. Based in Portland, Ore., Con-way Multimodal operates as a division of one of Con-way's three primary operating units, Menlo Worldwide Logistics, which annually manages more than $1 billion in transportation spend for its customers.

Con-way Multimodal succeeds the company's previous brokerage operation, known as Con-way Truckload Services. Its relationships with both small and large third-party carriers across the United States -- coupled with the technology, customer relationships and purchasing power of the Con-way enterprise -- provide shippers with reliable capacity, planning flexibility and access to a broad range of transportation and logistics services.

&quot;The relaunching and expansion of our truckload brokerage company and its new leadership will help accelerate our growth in this segment with a strong market offering and a clearly defined and delineated brand,&quot; said Douglas W. Stotlar, Con-way president and CEO. &quot;The flexibility inherent in brokerage operations is a key component of the capacity mix for many shipping customers. Delivering an effective, scalable capability, with a solid base of reliable third-party carriers, is a natural fit that complements our enterprise business portfolio.&quot;

Leading Con-way Multimodal as its president will be Tyler S. Ellison, who joins the organization as a 12-year veteran of the transportation and logistics industry. &quot;Tyler brings to Con-way Multimodal proven experience developing highly valued transportation solutions for shipping and logistics customers,&quot; said Robert L. Bianco Jr., president of Menlo Worldwide Logistics. &quot;His strategic insight and innovative ideas will help this business unit develop and grow as the brokerage marketplace evolves. We are delighted to have him on our team.&quot;
Ellison becomes responsible for the development and execution of business strategy and operations for Con-way Multimodal, which arranges third-party carrier services for over-the-road, intermodal, flatbed, heavy haul and specialized transportation for truckload freight shipments. The company's reach will extend throughout the United States and into Canada and Mexico.
Prior to joining Con-way Multimodal, Ellison served in a variety of increasingly responsible leadership roles at Schneider National, Inc. Most recently, he was senior vice president of the Global Client Group where he directed a team of sales leaders focused on meeting the global supply chain needs of large multinational customers. Previously, he was vice president and general manager of Schneider Transportation Management at Schneider Logistics, Inc. Ellison began his freight transportation career with Schneider National in 1996.

&quot;I look forward to driving the strategic expansion and development of Con-way Multimodal,&quot; said Ellison. &quot;The strength and recognition of the Con-way brand gives us a great foundation. I'm confident that my background and experience, combined with the top-notch team we take to market, will make a difference for the enterprise and our customers.&quot;

Ellison holds a master's degree in international logistics from Georgia Tech. He received a bachelor's degree from Augsburg College before earning a juris doctor degree from William Mitchell College of Law in St. Paul, Minn. Prior to entering the transportation and logistics industry, Ellison practiced law in Minneapolis, Minn.

The name change will become effective upon the receipt of the requisite government approval.

            <link>http://www.kgmoment.com/agency/news/item/Conway_Inc_Achieves_Highest_Score_for_Fuel_Efficiency_and_Environmental_Performance_for_2007_under_EPAs_SmartWaysupTMsup_Transport_Partnership</link>
            <description>Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload and Menlo Worldwide Logistics Rated 'Outstanding'

SAN MATEO, Calif. -- July 10, 2008 -- Con-way Inc. (NYSE: CNW) today announced that its three primary operating companies, Con-way Freight, Con-way Truckload and Menlo Worldwide Logistics, received the highest fuel efficiency and environmental performance score for 2007 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SmartWay(TM) Transport Partnership.

The companies each received a Shipper Index Factor (SIF) of 1.25, the highest possible score awarded under the EPA program. The rating signifies that the companies are utilizing the largest number of commercially available fuel savings strategies, while continuing to actively evaluate and consider promising new savings methods and emerging technologies. Higher scores make carriers and logistics companies more attractive to freight shippers and support their carbon emission reduction strategies. Companies achieving the highest score are also granted exclusive rights to use the trademarked SmartWay logo.

&quot;Our collaboration with the EPA's SmartWay Transport program is well-aligned with our overall corporate sustainability mission,&quot; said Douglas W. Stotlar, Con-way's president and CEO. &quot;The SmartWay performance model is a sophisticated, proven best practice. Utilizing this program helps us refine our operations and adopt practices that reduce our carbon footprint in measurable, lasting ways. In a carbon intensive business like ours, conserving fuel and other forms of energy delivers not only sustainability benefits but bottom-line results as well. It makes us a more competitive, attractive business partner for shippers who are pursuing parallel efforts to reduce the environmental impact of their supply chains.&quot;

Through EPA's program, 800 SmartWay trucking and logistics companies commit to measuring and improving the efficiency of their freight operations using the EPA-developed F.L.E.E.T. (Fleet Logistics Energy and Environmental Tracking) Performance Model. Carriers and logistics companies must agree to improve their performance within three years and must also sign the SmartWay Transport Partnership Agreement.

In 2007, Con-way Freight's SmartWay initiatives -- speed management, idling and aerodynamic control strategies, and engine and equipment upgrades -- yielded diesel fuel savings of 3,594,377 gallons or 3.8 percent savings of total fuel used. This savings equates to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of 601,928 tons. A member of the EPA's SmartWay Transport Program since 2006, Con-way Freight's 8,400-tractor fleet logged nearly 600 million miles on America's highways in 2007.

Con-way Truckload, which operates a fleet of 2,700 heavy-duty diesel tractors, joined the SmartWay Transport Partnership in 2005 and in 2007 received its second consecutive SmartWay Excellence Award for its innovative work toward reducing emissions and fuel consumption. To date, Con-way Truckload is also tracking well toward meeting its three-year improvement commitment. With single wide-base tires, no-idling strategies, aerodynamic equipment and speed management initiatives, among others, the company in 2007 reduced carbon dioxide emissions by 295,712 tons, which equates to diesel fuel savings of 2,575,475 gallons. Last year, the company ran more than 322 million miles in North America and consumed more than 54 million gallons of diesel fuel.

As a SmartWay Transport Partner for less than one year, Menlo Worldwide Logistics has already seen significant results from educating and promoting green initiatives among its contract carriers. Menlo emphasizes SmartWay compliance as a preferred factor when considering new carriers, and during its annual review process with existing carriers, encourages its trucking service providers to join SmartWay and actively adopt its performance model. The company is also implementing a no-idling policy at its distribution centers. Today, approximately 85 percent of its total network miles are operated with SmartWay-approved carriers.

&quot;I applaud Con-way for adopting clean strategies and technologies that reduce energy use and meet their SmartWay environmental commitments,&quot; said Margo T. Oge, director of EPA's Office of Transportation &amp; Air Quality.

The SmartWay Transport Partnership is an innovative collaboration between EPA and the freight industry to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.

EPA launched SmartWay in 2004 to address the environmental and economic challenges surrounding growth in the freight industry. Through the program, EPA is now working with 800 businesses to improve both their bottom line and the environment by offering technical assistance, tools for evaluating opportunities to lower fuel use and emissions and help in locating financing for the purchase of fuel-saving equipment and technology.

            <title>MPRI Launches its Expansion Into the Waste Management Market with a National Simulator-based ...</title>
            <link>http://www.kgmoment.com/agency/news/item/MPRI_Launches_its_Expansion_Into_the_Waste_Management_Market_with_a__National_Simulatorbased_Training_Campaign_</link>
            <description>National Solid Wastes Management Association Selects MPRI to Deliver State-of-the-Art Safety Training to Refuse Truck Drivers in 12 Cities

ALEXANDRIA, Va., and WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Feb. 19, 2008 -- MPRI, a global leader in vehicle and maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced it has launched its expansion into the waste management market with a national training campaign for refuse truck drivers. The National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) selected MPRI to deliver state-of-the-art training to drivers in 12 cities across the country. NSWMA is a trade association representing for-profit companies that provide waste collection, recycling and disposal services, as well as companies that provide professional and consulting services to the waste services industry.

The campaign marks the first time that refuse truck driver training has been provided on a national scale through state-of-the-art, simulator-based technology. Simulators are a valuable training tool, providing drivers the opportunity to practice complex driving scenarios in a risk-free environment. Safety is a top concern in the $50 billion waste management industry with waste collection frequently identified as a high hazard occupation.

NSWMA is providing training free of charge under a grant provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A total of 384 drivers will be trained on MPRI's TranSim VS IV driver simulator with software tailored specifically for the waste management industry. The campaign kicks off in Louisville, Ky., on March 3, and will continue throughout the month in Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, as well as Memphis, Tenn.; Raleigh, N.C.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Washington, D.C.

&quot;NSWMA is breaking new ground in its commitment to industry safety through this initiative, and we are pleased that they selected us to provide this important training,&quot; said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. &quot;Waste collection is a hazardous job and we are proud to play a key role in improving workplace conditions -- and even saving lives -- by teaching drivers techniques for operating equipment in the safest manner possible.&quot;

&quot;Safety should be a top priority for every member of the NSWMA, and that is why we're excited to offer the largest, most accessible driver training program to date,&quot; said David Biderman, safety director, NSWMA. &quot;We are confident that MPRI's innovative program will support our goal to reduce accidents and injuries involving solid waste collection vehicles and employees.&quot;

Each two-hour training session will feature standard classroom and computer-based training as well as hands-on driving time on MPRI's TranSim VS IV simulator. Because there are different types of waste collection vehicles, MPRI designed the simulator's software to support a variety of equipment including residential and automatic tippers and commercial collection haulers. Since the events will take place in metropolitan settings where drivers must often operate in tight spaces such as alleys, training will focus heavily on space management and backing up.

NSWMA also recently launched a national safety awareness campaign called &quot;Slow Down To Get Around&quot; to generate public awareness of the need to slow down and give waste collection workers the space they need to do their jobs safely. Together, the training and public awareness campaigns are expected to contribute to the steady downward trend in workplace injuries for solid waste workers.
